“When you chance upon something good & find yourself awed: that’s the Wonderstate.”
Rooted in this simple quote is the message behind former Kickapoo Coffee Roaster’s re-brand, which includes the opening of their new Madison café. The owners and core team at Wonderstate worked closely with Aro Eberle to design a space that evokes a sense of wonder and excitement, while remaining true to their Midwestern roots. The identity of the new café was formed based on contrasts: earnest yet elevated, grounded yet expansive, intimate yet bustling, unexpected yet Midwestern. Each design decision was meticulously considered through these contrasts to create a space that is both curated and genuine.
The mixture and variety of seating from custom “boothettes” for two, to communal banquettes, to counter seating with views of the bustling Capitol square, offer a place for all to feel welcome. The space is anchored by the deep blue curved forms at the bar and intentionally balanced by the delicate, vertical white wall tile and thin copper accents. Wood and natural concrete provide a complimentary sense of warmth and rawness that complete the material palette. Finally, the connection to the outdoors with the operable storefront and expanse of windows create an inviting gathering place and a retreat to break from the everyday by sparking a sense of wonder and awe.
